Sir John Timpson CBE: Why it is Important to Understand Attachment and Trauma in Children & Young People
Posted by Carolyn in News
On October 25th Medica will be welcoming Sir John Timpson CBE, as one of our keynote speakers at our ‘Attachment & Trauma Difficulties in Children & Young People’ Conference.
Sir John Timpson CBE is the chairman and owner of ‘Timpson’, a UK shoe repair chain with over 2000 shops nationwide. With 30 years’ experience as a chief executive, John has written a number of books with his most recent “’Keys to Success” being recognised as a CMI management book of the year.
As well as a successful business man, John and his late wife Alex fostered 90 children and young people which significantly influenced their lives, and they learnt a lot about attachment along the way. As a tribute to his late wife and the contribution she made to championing the rights of looked after (fostered and adopted) children, the Timpson family established ‘The Alex Timpson Trust’. A charity “dedicated to improving awareness and understanding of Attachment disorder”.
John and Alex’s journey with Attachment Disorder began with the fostering of a charming six-year-old boy, who they later adopted. In the beginning, they had difficulties with his challenging behaviour, including ignoring bedtimes, hiding at meal times and two school exclusions. It was a tricky time for them, but things began to change after Alex heard world attachment expert Dan Hughes speak at a local fostering meeting. Dan gave reasoning to the destressing behaviour they were experiencing, explaining due to attachment problems and trauma in the early years, it was important to provide the attachment that was missing in this young boy’s life. This understanding saved their relationship with him and this young boy has grown to be a wonderful man.
John now leads a campaign to encourage all schools to better respond to the special education needs of looked after children and has written several easy-to-read books about attachment, available free of charge from any Timpson’s store. In 2017, he was knighted for his services to business and fostering.
If you would like to hear more from Sir John Timpson CBE, speaking at ‘Attachment & Trauma Difficulties in Children & Young People’ Conference, John will be recounting his first-hand experience of fostering and adopting children and the influence on his life, the work of the Alex Timpson Trust and how Timpson’s have made the workplace attachment & trauma friendly, so staff thrive too!
